Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc has recompiled PHABSIM for Windows under contract to USGS. "We acknowledge the Instream Flow Council (http://www.instreamflowcouncil.org/) for their assistance with the update of the PHABSIM software. "PHABSIM Version 1.5 is provided here free as a supplemental download site in addition to the main USGS download site found here: http://www.fort.usgs.gov/Products/Software/PHABSIM/.
PHABSIM for Windows Version 1.2 was developed by USGS. PHABSIM Version 1.5 is the same program but compatible with the Microsoft Windows 7 64 bit operating system. The PHABSIM Labs and PHABSIM user manual can be found on the USGS site listed above. As of March 2012 the software has been tested with Windows 98, XP Pro, XP Pro 64 bit, Vista, and Windows 7 64 bit.
The recompiled program has several minor changes:
- The data entry errors associated with the 3rd party software are reduced but not entirely eliminated. The 3rd party software used in data entry is no longer supported and could not be updated at this time.
- Cross section stationing data is now checked for ascending sequential stationing and error codes triggered when non-ascending stationing occurs.
- Habitat suitability criteria can be entered either by single row or by cut and paste from spreadsheet data.
- Habitat suitability criteria are checked for duplicate are non-ascending data points for depth, velocity or channel index. Duplicate data trigger an error message to the user. The data points are sorted into ascending order before the file is saved.
Users are encouraged to send us reports of any errors found when using the software. We will attempt to fix errors caused by the recompilation of the software. In addition, Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc. provides fee based support for field data collection, data set problems, PHABSIM training, and general consultation on instream flow studies.

PHABSIM Version 1.5 was developed by the USGS Fort Collins Science Center, United States Department of the Interior. Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc recompiled the programs for use with Windows 7 computers under contract to USGS.
- The computer programs are furnished by Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc as a free service and are accepted and used by the recipient individual or group entity with the express understanding that the Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc makes no warranties, expressed of implied, concerning the accuracy, completeness, reliability, usability, or suitability for any particular purpose of the information or data contained in the programs, or furnished in connection therewith, and Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc shall be under no liability whatsoever to any such individual or group entity by reason of use thereof.
- There will be no operational support (including technical assistance) of software or documentation transferred from Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc unless specifically funded through a separate agreement or other appropriate arrangement.
- FORT programs were developed by the Federal Government with public funds. Therefore, Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc does not assert any proprietary rights thereto or represents that the programs are anything other than Government programs. The programs should be used only in the public interest and/or the advancement of science. The recipient will not imply proprietary possession of these programs in seeking clients for their application in either the public or private sectors. The recipient may charge clients for the ordinary cost of applying these programs.
- The recipient also understands that the current programs and all documents related thereto may be discontinued from further support or maintenance by Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc at any time. When Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc supports or maintains an updated version of any program and/or related document, the recipient can request the newest version. Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc may notify recorded users of updates and new products at Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc initiative, but such notifications are subject to budget and policy constraints. Recipients are not afforded any sort of subscription service.
