Ecological modeling can incorporate both physical and biological processes to model the interrelationships between individual components of the ecosystem. Ecological modeling can be an effective tool for administrators/decision makers who need to critically evaluate multiple management alternatives in complex systems. Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc. has developed ecological models for evaluation of land-use and management alternatives on aquatic ecosystems. • Endangered species evaluations • Population carrying capacity evaluations • Trophic interactions • Non-game native species evaluations • Resource management evaluations Applications for ecological modeling include determining population carrying capacity estimates, assessing the relative importance and quantifying trophic level linkages, and quantifying impacts of land-use practices on water quality and biological components. Large scale ecological modeling of complex systems may require a team of scientists from both physical and biological disciplines. The majority of modeling can be conducted in-house; however, MEC maintains professional contacts with scientists in the private and public sectors who can contribute to an ecological modeling effort should the need arise.
